Una lección sobre inmigración de Pablo Neruda, por Ariel Dorfman

El habitual columnista del diario The New York Times reflexiona sobre el fenómeno de la migración, la inmigración y el ejemplo de Neruda. El artículo fue publicado en la citada fuente:

«Chile, al igual que muchos otros países, ha estado debatiendo si dar la bienvenida a los migrantes, en su mayoría de Haití, Colombia, Perú y Venezuela, o mantenerlos fuera. Aunque solo medio millón de inmigrantes viven en esta nación de 17,7 millones, los políticos de derecha han avivado el sentimiento antiinmigrante, se han opuesto al aumento de las tasas de inmigración en la última década y han dirigido la violencia especialmente contra los inmigrantes haitianos.

La inmigración fue un tema importante en las elecciones aquí en noviembre y diciembre. El ganador fue Sebastián Piñera, un multimillonario de centroderecha de 68 años que fue presidente de 2010 a 2014 y que asumirá en marzo. El señor Piñera responsabilizó a los inmigrantes por la delincuencia, el tráfico de drogas y el crimen organizado. Se benefició del apoyo de José Antonio Kast, un político de extrema derecha que ha estado haciendo campaña para construir barreras físicas a lo largo de las fronteras con Perú y Bolivia, para detener a los inmigrantes.

Los chilenos no somos los únicos en presenciar la creciente xenofobia y nativismo, pero haríamos bien en recordar nuestra propia historia, que ofrece un modelo de cómo actuar cuando nos enfrentamos con extraños que buscan refugio.

El 4 de agosto de 1939, Winnipeg partió hacia Chile desde el puerto francés de Pauillac con más de 2.000 refugiados que habían huido de su patria española. Unos meses antes, el general Francisco Franco -con la ayuda de Mussolini y Hitler- había derrotado a las fuerzas del gobierno de España elegido democráticamente. Los fascistas desataron una ola de violencia y asesinato.

Entre los cientos de miles de partidarios desesperados de la República española que habían cruzado los Pirineos para escapar de esa embestida estaban los hombres, mujeres y niños que abordarían el Winnipeg y llegarían un mes más tarde al puerto chileno de Valparaíso.

La persona responsable de su escape milagroso fue Pablo Neruda, quien, a la edad de 34 años, ya era considerado el mejor poeta de Chile. Su prestigio en 1939 fue lo suficientemente significativo como para poder persuadir al presidente de Chile, Pedro Aguirre Cerda, que era imperativo para su pequeño país ofrecer asilo a algunos de los patriotas españoles maltratados que se podrían en los campos de internamiento franceses.

 

Experiencia y talento para Chile

Esto no solo daría un ejemplo humanitario, dijo Neruda, sino que también le proporcionaría a Chile la experiencia y el talento extranjeros necesarios para su propio desarrollo. El presidente aceptó autorizar algunas visas, pero el propio poeta tendría que encontrar los fondos para las costosas tarifas de esos emigrados, así como para comida y alojamiento durante sus primeros seis meses en el país. Y Neruda, una vez que estuvo en Francia coordinando la operación, necesitaba investigar a los emigrados para asegurarse de que poseían las mejores habilidades técnicas y un carácter moral intachable.

Fue necesario un coraje considerable para que el presidente Aguirre Cerda recibiera a los refugiados españoles en Chile. El país era pobre, todavía se tambaleaba por los efectos a largo plazo de la Depresión, con una alta tasa de desempleo, y acababa de sufrir un devastador terremoto en Chillán que había matado a 28.000 personas y dejado a muchas más heridas y sin hogar.

Una implacable campaña nativista de los partidos de derecha y sus medios, sintiendo la posibilidad de atacar al gobierno del Frente Popular, describió a los posibles solicitantes de asilo como «indeseables»: violadores, criminales, agitadores anticristianos cuya presencia, de acuerdo con un editorial chovinista en el principal documento conservador de Chile, sería «incompatible con la tranquilidad social y los mejores modales».

Neruda se dio cuenta de que sería más barato fletar un barco y llenarlo con los refugiados que enviarlos, una familia a la vez, a Chile. El Winnipeg estaba disponible pero, como era un barco de carga, tuvo que ser restaurado para dar cabida a unos 2.000 pasajeros con literas, comedores, una enfermería, una guardería para los más pequeños y, por supuesto, letrinas.

Mientras los voluntarios del Partido Comunista Francés trabajaban día y noche para preparar el buque, Neruda estaba recolectando donaciones de toda América Latina, y de amigos como Pablo Picasso, para financiar una empresa cada vez más exorbitante. El tiempo era corto: Europa se estaba preparando para la guerra, y los burócratas en Santiago y París saboteaban el esfuerzo.

A pesar de todo, Neruda se alimentó de su amor por España y de su compasión por las víctimas del fascismo, incluido uno de sus mejores amigos, el poeta Federico García Lorca, que había sido asesinado por un escuadrón de la muerte fascista en 1936.

Como cónsul de Chile durante los primeros años de la República española, Neruda había sido testigo del bombardeo de Madrid. La destrucción de esa ciudad que amaba y el asalto a la cultura y la libertad debían marcarlo por el resto de su vida y cambiar drásticamente sus prioridades literarias.

Después de la caída de la República, declaró: «Juro defender hasta mi muerte lo que ha sido asesinado en España: el derecho a la felicidad». No es de extrañar que haya proclamado que el Winnipeg fue su «poema más bello».

Y cuando ese «poema» magnífico, gigantesco y flotante suyo, después de un peligroso viaje, finalmente llegó a Valparaíso, sus pasajeros, a pesar de las protestas de los nacionalistas de derecha y simpatizantes nazis, recibieron bienvenida de héroes dignos.

En espera de los supervivientes sin dinero de las legiones de Franco estaba el representante personal del presidente Aguirre Cerda, su ministro de Salud, un joven médico llamado Salvador Allende. Unas multitudes entusiastas reunidas en el muelle, cantando canciones de resistencia españolas, se reunieron para saludar a los refugiados, algunos de los cuales ya tenían puestos de trabajo.

Los refugiados que arribaron seguirían ayudando a crear un Chile más próspero, abierto e inventivo. Incluyeron al historiador Leopoldo Castedo, el diseñador de libros Mauricio Amster, el dramaturgo y ensayista José Ricardo Morales y los pintores Roser Bru y José Balmes.

Casi 80 años después, esos indeseables plantean preguntas inquietantes para nosotros, tanto en Chile como en otros lugares. ¿Dónde están los presidentes que reciben a los refugiados indigentes con los brazos abiertos a pesar de la calumnia más virulenta en su contra? ¿Dónde están los Nerudas de antaño, listos para lanzar barcos como poemas para defender el derecho a la felicidad?
